India and Fiji have taken significant steps to enhance their defence cooperation, following extensive discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka. This meeting, held on March 4, 2024, at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, resulted in a comprehensive action plan aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.
During the talks, both leaders emphasized their commitment to a free, inclusive, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the shared aspirations of India and Fiji, despite the geographical distance separating the two countries. He stated that their partnership reflects a mutual desire for stability and prosperity in the region.
Rabuka is on a three-day visit to India, marking his first trip as Fiji’s Prime Minister. His arrival on March 3, 2024, underscores the importance of Fiji as a strategic partner for India, particularly in matters of maritime security. The growing presence of China in the Pacific has prompted both nations to bolster their defence ties, ensuring a collaborative approach to regional challenges.
Following their discussions, India and Fiji signed seven agreements aimed at expanding cooperation across various sectors, including trade, healthcare, agriculture, and people-to-people connections. These agreements not only enhance bilateral relations but also reflect a broader commitment to regional security and development.
In addressing the media alongside Prime Minister Rabuka, Modi confirmed that both nations had agreed to enhance their cooperation in defence and security. He mentioned that an action plan has been prepared, detailing the initiatives to be undertaken. As part of this plan, India will provide training and equipment support to strengthen Fiji’s maritime security capabilities, reinforcing their collaborative efforts.
The discussions also touched on other areas of mutual interest, such as economic development and the importance of cultural exchange. Prime Minister Rabuka expressed optimism about the future of India-Fiji relations, noting that both countries could benefit from increased collaboration in various fields.
As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the partnership between India and Fiji is poised to play a crucial role in promoting stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. The commitment to a shared vision reflects a growing recognition of the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing regional and global challenges.
